My Radiator Isn’t Getting Hot: A Homeowner’s Troubleshooting Guide. There’s nothing quite as frustrating as turning up the heating on a chilly evening only to find one of your radiators remains stubbornly cold. Before you assume the worst, and a hefty repair bill, there are several common culprits you can investigate yourself.
At Marvellous Property Services, we believe in empowering our clients. Here is our step-by-step guide to diagnosing a cold radiator and getting the warmth back into your home.
1. Check the Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV)
The most common reason for a cold radiator is the Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV), the dial usually found at the bottom of the unit.
- Is it turned on? It sounds simple, but ensure it hasn’t been knocked or turned to ‘0’ or the ‘frost’ setting.
- Is the pin stuck? If the valve is open but the radiator is cold, the internal pin might be stuck in the ‘closed’ position. Remove the plastic cap and gently wiggle the pin with a pair of pliers to see if it springs back up.
2. Bleed the Radiator (If the top is cold)
If the bottom of the radiator is warm but the top is cold, you likely have trapped air. Air bubbles take up the space where hot water should be, preventing even circulation.
- The Fix: Use a radiator key to slowly turn the bleed valve (at the top corner) anti-clockwise. You’ll hear a hissing sound as air escapes. As soon as water starts to trickle out, tighten it back up.
- Note: Always do this while the heating is off to avoid being sprayed with hot water.
3. Check for Sludge (If the bottom is cold)
If the top is hot but the bottom is stone-cold, you likely have a buildup of radiator sludge (iron oxide). This heavy debris settles at the bottom, blocking the flow of hot water.
Unlike trapped air, sludge usually requires a professional power flush to clear the system. This is a job for the experts at Marvellous Property Services, as it involves chemical cleaning and high-pressure flushing.
4. Inspect the Boiler Pressure
If multiple radiators are struggling, the issue might lie at the source. Check the pressure gauge on your boiler.
- Ideal Pressure: For most UK homes, this should be around 1.5 bar.
- Low Pressure: If it has dropped below 1 bar, your system may not have enough power to push water to every radiator. You may need to top it up using the filling loop, consult your boiler manual or call us if you’re unsure.
